2014 Men’s U23 African Nations Championship- Day 5

Tunisia crowned Men’s U23 African champions 

 Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, November 12, 2014- Tunisia won the first ever Men’s U23 African Nations Championship title following their victory over hosts Egypt 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21) in the final of the competition held at Youth City complex Hall in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt on Wednesday.

 Algeria won the bronze medal in spite of their dramatic defeat against the outstanding Libya 3-2 (27-29, 25-22, 26-28, 25-22, 15-9). Algeria dropped to 2-3 with 7 points, while Libya improved also to 2-3 with 5 points to finish in the fourth position.

Morocco beat Rwanda 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18), and they stayed in the sixth and last position with 1-4 record but Rwanda finished in the fifth position with the same win- loss ratio, but Rwanda was better in the set quotient. 

 After the matches FIVB Executive vicepresident and CAVB President Dr Amr Elwani accompanied by the South Sinai Governor General Khalid Foda and the Egyptian Volleyball Federation President Foad Abdelsalam honoured the Tunisian team with the gold medals and the cup, Egypt with the silver medals and Algeria with the bronze.  

Tunisia v Egypt 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21)

 Tunisia flew past Egypt 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21) in the final of the competition to claim the first ever title for this age category.

  Tunisia’s outside hitter Adam Oueslati was the match scorer with impressive 27 points followed by outside hitter Elyes Garfi 14 points. The Egyptian opposite Mohamed Said was his team scorer with 20 points followed by the middle blocker Mohamed Adel 14 points.

  Tunisia dominated the match with their superiority in areas of spiking and blocking and kept their stable performance throughout the match.

 Egypt led at the beginning of the first set through the spikes of Marawan Salah from position 4 and the quick attacks of Mohamed Adel to lead 8-6 at the first TTO. Although the Tunisian blockers worked well, Egypt could penetrate the Tunisian block to lead 16-14. When the Tunisian setter Khalid Ben Slimane came to service, he succeeded to win 5 consecutive points that allowed his team to decrease the point deficit before they won the set 25-19.

  The Egyptian players committed a lot of mistakes in the second set specially in reception allowing the Tunisian team to lead frequently. Oueslati played his best from position 2 to penetrate the Egyptian block and win the set 25-22.

  Egypt struggled in the third set to save the match as they used the spike service of Mohamed Said and the quick attacks from Mohamed Adel to win the set 25-23 after a great resistance from the Tunisians.

  Tunisia regained their rhythm using the outside hitter Malek Chekir and the quick attacks through the centers to finish the job and win the set 25-21.

 Algeria v Libya 3-2 (27-29, 25-22, 26-28, 25-22, 15-9)

  Libya fought for 131 minutes to clinch a tough 3-2 (27-29, 25-22, 26-28, 25-22, 15-9) over Algeria in the tournament’s only tiebreaker.

  The Libyan outside hitter Alamin Al Saghir led the Libyan scorers with 22 points including 2 aces and 6 kill blocks, followed by Ahmed Omran 17 points. From the Algerian side Ould Chechali led the scorers with 22 points including 5 blocks followed by Amar Harz 19 points.

  What made the difference in the tight game that show very near skill averages was the high enthusiasm of the Libyan players specially after they won the second set. 

  The fully exciting match showed the Libyan team playing with their best performance since the start of the competition. The first set was one of the most exciting in the overall competition as Algeria started dominating the net action through the attackers. Algeria led 29-27 after a hard fought that show Libya coming from 5 points behind to draw 24-24 before the Algerian spiker Harz scored the crucial points in their way to win the set 29-27.

  Libya rebounded quickly in the second set and used the spikes of Omran and the blocks of Al Saghir and Mohamed Al Ghoul to win the set 25-22 to recover emotionally. 

  Again the third set was very tight with the Libyan team having the lead this time before Algeria rebounded and won the final points to win narrowly 28-26.

 Libya overwhelmed the situation in the fourth set with their stars Al Saghir and Omran playing their best to win the fourth set 25-22 and the tiebreak 15-9. 

  Morocco v Rwanda 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18) 

 Morocco finished their campaign in the tournament with a victory over Rwanda 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18), whoever they couldn’t escape the last position as both teams were level at win- loss ratio of 1-4, with 3 points, but Rwanda were ahead with the set ratio (4/12 for Rwanda and 4/13 for Morocco)

  Morocco started the match with more concentration and succeeded through their stable reception and backline defence build up the attacks through the attackers Zohair El Garaoui and Farah Razani to win the first set 25-17.

  Rwanda rebounded in the second set as they improved their service beside the combinations led by their setter by Bonny Mutabazi to win the set 25-21 and bring the score to the draw 1-1.

  Again El Garaoui led Morocco to win the third set 25-20 after a big fight from the Rwandan team specially after the second TTO. It was easy for Morocco to win the fourth set and the match 3-1 with their high spirit.
